Trailer Skirts. Love them or hate them, It's the latest craze for aero. Thoughts?
I just took delivery of 3 reefer trailers with skirts. These are a first for my fleet. I have heard skirts will improve your fuel economy, but you will get the greatest improvement if the tractor you pull with is also aero friendly. In other words: The same trailer will perform better behind an aerodynamic tractor v/s non aero. If you are driving a long hood truck with big air cleaners outside the hood, you will not see the full gain of the skirts. It all starts up front.

That has been my finding as well . I picked up a solid 4 to 5 tenths using Fleet Engineers Air Slipper side skirts on my Utility dry van. My life time MPG average for my Cascadia is at 8.6 MPG with 237,000 miles on the odometer.

One other thing I noticed after installing side skirts is the trailer rocks less in a cross wind.I beleive this is due to the air hitting the trailer at a lower spot and balancing the force out.

I am anxious to hear from the drivers if the stability is improved with the skirts or not. This would be an added bonus.

We are working on ways to skirt our straight truck from the steps to the cab all the way to the back.

Not sure if we will go around each belly box or if we will cover them and have to lift a the panel to get into the boxes. For a smooth line that will look good I like the idea of covering everything, for ease of use though it might really be a pain. Time will tell how we figure out this ongoing dilemma.

That would be neat to see. I have not seen a straight truck with skirts yet.
