All cleaned up for the show however this wouldn't last for long!

Last week, I attended the Mid America Truck Show in Louisville, KY. The weather brought cold temperatures to the area. Inside the convention center, people came from all over the world to experience America’s largest truck show.

At this years show, the centerpiece of Freightliner’s booth showcased the new Cascadia Evolution. This truck has been making big headlines in the media with its remarkable fuel mileage. From fleets that have had pre-production models for testing to the performance of test units, it appears as though fuel efficiency has improved by approximately 7%.

In regards to fuel mileage, I had just recently reached 10 mpg. for a normal fill up after completing 1,438 miles. Unfortunately, last week’s results were the worst I’ve experienced since driving the Cascadia Evolution. The poor results were due to many factors including: driving in the mountains, event set up for the truck show, traffic backups, and 3 days of driving in snow, wind and heavy rain. Not having a a pushed delivery schedule, I made more stops than normal. My average loaded GVW was approximately 70,000 pounds. This combination of events added up to give me the worst fuel mileage I’ve ever recorded in my Cascadia Evolution. The number for fuel mileage was 7.763 mpg. While this number is low for my Cascadia Evolution and DD15 engine DT12 transmission combo, it’s not long ago that 7.763 mpg. would have been a great high number to achieve.

I’m hoping last week was old man winters last hurrah for the season. Now that spring is upon us, the temperatures will be warming which should result in better fuel mileage numbers.

Joel ,

It sounds like you are off to a good start of hitting your goal of 8 MPG . Its all of the little details the rest of the way there.

Your "worst" is my goal. Warmer weather has helped and starting to see consistent
7.0 -7.26 mpg on 1,000+ miles between fill ups. Not bad for a Coronado and flatbed. I like the idea of doing consistent 8's.

Your all time high MPG followed almost directly by your all time lowest MPG. No better way to compare the good and bad. Hopefully the weather will start to get better and your mileage will again hit new highs.

Jeff,

I had to be careful as I only have one powered axle in my tandem . What I have to watch out for is low spots hidden by the snow. If I hang the one powered axle in the air the truck is stuck. The wide base singles have always worked well in the snow for me.Having a 6 X 2 axle configuration keeps me on my toes when there is snow however most days it's not snowing. I always tell people who are interested in operating a set up such as mine they have to be looking for ways to make it work because if they are looking for ways to make it fail they WILL find them.

7.763 for a "worst"-not bad-but the big question is "how did the that drive train with the super singles perform?".
