One day this week, I was parked near a McDonalds and decided to go inside for a quick breakfast. As I walked in the door, a nice lady welcomed me with a bright and cheery smile and said “Good morning sir.” She took my order and asked me “how are you doing today?” We began to talk while she was getting my order ready and I couldn’t help but notice how nice and enthusiastic she was about performing her job.

As I sat eating my breakfast, it was fun watching her serve others as they came in the door. One lady customer in particular was totally taken back by Mildred’s superior customer service. When the customer sat down close to my table, we began to discuss what a great employee Mildred is for the establishment. We both agreed that it was so refreshing to get this kind of service and it helped to begin our day on a positive note.

When I finished eating, I felt it was necessary to go up to Mildred and compliment her on the outstanding customer service she was providing for not only me, but everyone who walked in the door that morning. Mildred’s manager overheard me speaking to her and walked over to see what we were talking about. I then explained to her manager what an excellent job Mildred is doing for McDonalds. I thanked each of them and began to walk out the door when I noticed an 800 number on my coffee cup where a person can call to make comments or suggestions to the company. I immediately called the number from my cell phone and asked to speak to a customer service representative. I wanted to make sure to speak with a person on the phone vs. a computer/voice mail so I avoided all the prompts and went directly to a live person. I shared my experience from the morning being greeted and served by Mildred at the Brookshire, Texas McDonalds. I explained that it was uplifting to receive such wonderful customer service and that I wanted her to be recognized for her efforts.

As I drove away, I began to think to myself how nice it would be if everyone greeted and served one another in such a way as Mildred. Imagine if every driver would treat their shipper/consignee in such a manner?

Greetings and smiles are free and won’t cost you a penny.

Thank you Henry for this important blog. Our country would be so much better if every citizen could read this, reflect on their own behavior and make a conscious daily effort to treat everyone they encounter in a more positive way and provide recognition for other people's efforts!

I need to be as quick to compliment as I am to complain.
