Why I Drive

+500 MILES

This Sunday, I was driving from Peoria, IL to Trenton, MO and I witnessed a most spectacular sunset. I decided to stop and take a picture before it faded off for the evening. When people ask me why I enjoy driving, it is such moments as this. The job affords me the best office window possible.

Each year, I get to experience all the seasons in their splendor. Some days, I drive in bitter cold temperatures with cloudy skies and other days are warm and sunny. Even with the winter challenges, there is nothing like the fresh fallen snow as it glitters in the sun or shines below a moonlight night. After a long winter, Mother Nature awakens and I travel among the new leaves forming on the trees, the flowers begin to bloom and the days become longer. Summertime brings growth of cops which will later feed our nation when harvested in the fall months. During the fall months, I really enjoy the changing of the leaves with their majestic colors. There is a chill in the air as Mother Nature prepares for another cycle.

Over the many years that I have been driving for a living, I have met people from all over the country. Some of them are now longtime friends. These friends have helped to make my many journeys more pleasurable while out on the road. You never know when you’ll bump into an old friend you haven’t seen for years. I have reunited with old school friends who have moved to various parts of the country and have even run into an old neighbor who now lives in another state across the country. On one occasion, I had the opportunity to meet a man with whom I was going to work on a project, just to find out that he lives just 2 miles from my home in North Carolina. I met this man in Iowa and we had a good laugh afterwards.

I really like having food choices from around the country. The deli’s of New Jersey, Amish food in Pennsylvania, Asian cuisine in Louisiana, Mexican Food in Texas and Seafood in New England. I think every state has a different variation of BBQ of which I have tried many from across the United States.

As a young boy, my favorite toys were ones that had wheels. I guess this is why I have enjoyed driving for so many years. So tonight, while driving across US -36 in Missouri and witnessing yet again another beautiful sunset, I thought I would share this moment with you. Hope you enjoy the view I had this evening.

I remember my days hauling local. My average trip was about 20 miles round trip and I drove the exact same road every time. People would ask me if it was boring seeing the same thing every day. I would tell them every trip is different and would relay to them much the same that you mentioned above with regard to mother nature, it just never got old. Multiple trips the same day were each different due to the position of the sun. A stunning trip is a haul down Oregon Hwy 101 on a beautiful clear summer evening as the sun sets.
