This week, I took a run from North Carolina to Detroit, Michigan. What makes this trip worthy of a story are the incredible fuel mileage results in less than stellar operating conditions.
The tale of the story begins in Meridian, Mississippi which happens to be the location where I fueled the truck. My loaded weight was 73,000 lbs. and I was in the midst of the Thanksgiving traffic congestion. The next stop was the delivery point of Charlotte, NC. After dropping off the shipment, I headed to High Point, NC to have some minor repairs done on my trailer. Next, I traveled home for the Thanksgiving holiday. While at home, on Thanksgiving eve, I received a phone call informing me the trailer repairs were completed. I then went back to High Point to retrieve the trailer. This turned out to be a mistake as traffic was horrendous and the normal 65 mile trip took over 2 hours to complete. On the following Monday, I picked up a load in Mt. Holly, NC with a loaded weight of 72,000 lbs. with a final destination of Brighton, Michigan. The route for this trip was as follows: Route I- 77 north, US 33, I-270, US 23, I-75 and I-96. The foothills of North Carolina, fancy gap and the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia are never a walk in the park. I stopped at North Baltimore, Ohio to refuel. The final fuel mileage results were as follows: 7.7 mpg for the trip from Mt. Holly to North Baltimore. 8.7 mpg since the last fuel up in Meridian, Mississippi and 8.7 mpg as calculated from figures off the fuel pump.
These results are amazing. As you can imagine, I’m quite pleased with how the new Cascadia Evolution has been performing so far. It’s not that distant of a memory when trucks could only attain 6 mpg on a trip such as described above.

Sorry, hit the post button too quick. Most days will be pulling a 32' dry van. Pool business varies daily. Some plaster loads can be 30,000 lbs. Store delivery days vary drastically. Salt and sand are 3500 lb pallets. Run thru Central MO is a lot of 2 lane roads, 60 to 65 mph speed limit. Longest Interstate run is down to Columbia. 125 miles on I-70.

Longest run is down to Rolla MO. 400 mile roundtrip. Up to 7 stops enroute. 200 miles empty coming home. some days are just local around KC. Any idea of cost difference from Eaton 10 speed to the DT12 ? Interesting article about being able to get 10.67 mpg.

Before I can answer your question I need to know how much in town delivery is made along your route? Also, I would like to know what your average vehicle speed is for your current truck, vehicle weight and the lenght of "empty miles" on your return trip home. From the little bit of information you've shared, I think your on the right track.

Hello Henry. Wanted to ask your advice about the tractor the company is going to order for me. Freighliner Day cab, with Detroit DD13 engine. Spec sheet says they are going to use a 3:73 axle ratio. We are a private carrier, so we do not backhaul after I make my last delivery. Resulting in half of my miles being ran empty. I deliver all over the Western half of Missouri. So I do not encounter any mountain terrain. I suggested they switch to a 3:55 or even a 3:42 ratio. What are your thoughts ?

That is pretty impressive. My first truck was a 1977 White Roadboss and I thought 5 mpg was good.

That is some pretty good fuel consumption for that trip! I am freshly aware that 6 mpg (and sometimes a little less) is the best I can achieve on a route like that!
