Located in Amarillo, Texas and pretty hard to miss due to the many signs advertising the "Free 72oz STEAK".  There is a hotel, a horse hotel, RV park, as well as truck parking behind the restaurant.   The hotel also has a swimming pool in the shape of Texas.

The outside looks like a gaudy roadside attraction and even though we used to travel to Amarillo often to shop we never ate at the Big Texan.  Finally by accident and on a whim we decided to see what all the fuss was about and it did not take us long to figure out that we had been missing out all of those years.

There are plenty of steaks to choice from on the menu and there is one to fit your appetite.  The prices are average for a good steak in a steak house.  There are also local favorites including a fantastic Chicken Fired Steak.  The atmosphere is probably what surprised me most, as it is a cross between a fancy steak house and an old time Texas bar.   We walked around the gift store, the arcade, the bar area, and then back to the restaurant, looking at the antiques and the woodwork.  There is no way to see it all in one visit.   They also have free limo service and will pick you up from a truck stop or a hotel.

While eating a normal sized steak we have enjoy watching the table front and center of the people trying to not only eat the 72-ounce steak but all that goes with it.  Everything must be eating in an hour and it is fun to watch them try to get this accomplished.

I would recommend this place to anyone wanting a good steak that is in the area.

Kurt Mountain Oysters are popular in that area and are often served at bars. So what did you think of them? I have had them a few times and did not think they were that bad and would probably eat them again. We have also not been able to catch the breakfast buffet.

The truck parking area was kind of rough when I was there. Got there too late in the morning for their breakfast buffet, might have to try that sometime. We were daring and tried the mountain oysters.

Yes Jon there are some amazing people that can eat that steak. I like going there and enjoy the history of the place and the fun. We can have a quiet meal in one of the booths or out in the open and watch what is going on.

Great place, I saw a skinny teenage girl down it all in under 50 minutes. That's enough food for 2 people for 2 days! But, I like you, always thought tourist trap! Not so.
