A lot goes into planning what you are going to call yourself when you decide to become an owner operator.  You want to pick a name that represents the strength of your company, but is also catchy to the ear and easy to remember.   The other side of the coin, in regards to business names, is making sure you use your proper legal business name every time!

I could've just as easily slapped a sticker on the door of my truck and called myself "Nevarez Trucking", but chose to spice it up a little bit when I named my company "Angus Transportation, Inc.”, once I made the move from being a sole proprietor to being a corporation.  As far as most sole proprietors go when first starting out, there is no harm in just running under your actual legal given name.  Once you choose to deviate from that and take on a business name making sure you use that same legal name or DBA on everything from insurance to licensing documents in the same proper form becomes critical.

I recently ran across a story in a publication by Sandra Medina from American Alliance Drug Testing stating that they have actually been approached by clients of theirs that have actually failed their carrier audit because they didn't use the proper name for registering.  This is a horrible price to pay for something as small as a clerical error in names.

Make sure that when you choose a business name to put on the side of your truck, that use it in all of your business dealings in its entirety.  It also helps to make sure that you register your business name with all proper city, state, county and federal authorities that have a hand in your trucking business.  This will help alleviate different government entities mixing up your data when dealing with one-another.
