Every year since 1970, the U.S. Forest Service has chosen a different national forest to contribute a tree. For the first time ever, Alaska will contribute the tree that will sit on the west lawn in front of the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, D.C.

It takes a herculean effort to move the 74' tree and to keep it alive on the 4000 mile journey across the continent.  In fact, the tree will drink over 40 gallons of water a day during the trip which happens to be underway right now.  The tree was transported by truck from the Chugach National Forest down to the port of Anchorage to be loaded on a ship for the float down to Seattle.  Once unloaded in Seattle, it will travel by truck again all the way to Washington, D.C.

There will be opportunities to see it if you're between Washington state and Washington D.C. during that time frame.  CLICK HERE to track the tree.  Or you can follow along on their Facebook page or Twitter page.
