If you've ever served in the military, you know the camaraderie and strong friendships that are made. Just last week, I was able to see an old friend that I hadn't seen in nearly 25 years. We were stationed together in Germany and served in short term assignments in France and Greece as well.

I picked up a load of military freight in North Carolina and transported it all the way to California. The trip took me right through Bakersfield, CA where my friend lived. I let him know in advance that I was coming through and the timing couldn't have been better. I unloaded the military equipment and reloaded for Dallas the same day. After loading, I traveled to Bakersfield, which was on the route and took my 34 hour reset. I needed the time off anyway, I was tired! We met and he took me to some hole in the wall place that served up one of the biggest and best breakfasts ever! It was worthy of being on the Travel Channel as a Man vs. Food type of establishment.

I've used my trips before to visit family in Florida, but more often than not, there isn't time for a visit. People don't understand the time restraints that are put on us from the customers and by federal regulations. However, if you get a chance to see an old friend or family member while on the road, let them know as far in advance as you can that it may be a possibility to visit. That will give them time to make room in their schedules and make adjustments if needed. Hopefully, you'll consider visiting an old friend or family member you haven't seen in years. You never know where that travel agent will send you sometimes!

Thanks Beth, I like the mini-vacation reference. I hadn't thought of it, but that's what it felt like.

I love this tip, Joey! Sometimes seeing a friendly face can really go a long way - it boosts your mood, and makes you feel like you took a mini-vacation (even though you really didn't). A wonderful suggestion!
