Wild Goose Trail

I have been keeping this trail to myself for years. Now, as I turned the corner to park at my little truck stop, I realized that my secret would get out. There was a Love's Truck Stop being constructed on the corner. There is a small truck stop with a half dozen places that I had been using. It is only open from 6am – 6 pm. There is a 24 hour gas station a half mile walk from the little truck stop. Before I hit the bunk for 8 hours I would walk on the trail and visit this 24 hour station.

The location of the new Loves will be on US 41 exit 97 Hickory Road at the south end of Fon Du Lac, Wi. My little Marathon Station is next door. The Wild Goose Trail is a chip shot away. The trail itself is your typical Wisconsin crushed limestone trail. This one is a little less maintained. That adds to its charm. As you can see it often turns into two trails the width of truck tires with grass growing in the middle. I think that it adds to the charm, but it may preclude those fancy road bikes. It is still perfectly adequate for my hybrid.

The trail runs south from Fun Du Lac to Clyman Junction. It runs through the towns of Oakfield and Juneau along the way. It gets its name because it runs near the famous Horicon Marsh. If you are a birder the marsh is paradise. It is home to over 350 species of birds. You will see many of these birds along the trail. I discovered the trail while I was driving between Waupun, WI and Rockford, IL along state highway 26. When it intersects highway 33 there is a small truck stop on the northwest corner. I have never not been able to get a spot there. There is also trail head parking big enough for a truck just south of highway 33 along highway 26.

You will also cross paths with the trail if you are running to Beaver Dam from the south if you come up US 41. Beaver Dam is the home of a newer Wal Mart DC. The truck stop is a convenient place to camp out along the way. Since they built the DC, County Highway A from US 151 to Highway 26 has been upgraded and traffic. Local truckers use this to bypass Juneau. That lightens traffic on 26 and now there is definitely ample truck parking.

The Wild Goose Trail is an easily accessible escape for truckers. Run, walk, or ride a bike. It doesn't matter. Enjoy your break whether it is merely your 30 minute break, your 10 hour break, or even a 34 restart. There are hotels near the Fun Du Lac trail head.

True, Tyrone. When we first started mapping access to these trails we talked about access. The place that I parked at might fit 6 trucks on a good day. It is only open 12 hours per day. Once they get the new TS built we can put it up on the map. I would like to see all kinds of truckers use it then.

It is. I carry a hybrid bike with me and have used it on this trail. A mountain bike would work easily on this trail. It may not work quite as well for the more sophisticated road bikes though.
