It has been a little over 2 years since I wrote about baseball. So, on this special occasion I am going to do it again. All of my life, I have loved baseball. The Cubs have always been my team. It hasn't always been great. I remember as a little guy running home from Ben Franklin School to watch the last couple of innings with my grandma. They struggled to stay out of last place. I didn't care, I was a fan.

When I first started trucking, I could pick up games from Chicago, Cincinnati, Baltimore, St. Louis etc. Those AM super stations really carried at night. Jack Buck and Ernie Harwell were my voices of the night. Satellite radio only increased my interest in the game. When you have satellite radio you can listen to all the games. You can immerse yourself in sports and avoid the real world. Considering how intense the real world has been this election season – sports – baseball and especially the Cubs have been my great escape.

I passed through Cleveland on the first night of the World Series. Progressive field was brightly lit up for the first game. Across the plaza, the Quicken Loans Arena was lit up. The Cavs were receivingraising their NBA championship banner. The skyline was lit up in the red and blue colors of the Indians. The blimp was flying over all of it. Traveling eastbound on I90 that night it was the most beautiful urban scene that I can remember. The day after the series was over, I drove I94 through Chicago. Some of them congratulated the Cubs. Even the sign at White Sox park said congratulations to the Cubs.

This was an epic World Series. Both teams scored 27 runs. The seventh game went into extra innings. The Cubs won, but the Indians could not have played them any closer. When they won, I remembered all of my family's Cubs fans who never saw it. My great grand mother had an autographed picture of Ernie Banks proudly displayed in her room. I remembered running home from school to watch the games with my grandma. I wanted to call my brothers to celebrate, but they didn't live long enough to see it.

Catcher was the position I had dreamed of playing in the big leagues. To me baseball is the thinking man's game. The ultimate thinking man's position was catcher. My dream was to get a walk off hit to win the World Series for the Cubs at Wrigley Field. I never dreamed of being a great player. My dream was “just” to be a journeyman catcher on a winning team. I would have been David Ross. He is a pro's pro who helped guide these young Cubs. He showed them how to be a professional. Ross was the type of player who you wanted on your team. Ross is the ultimate good guy leader who could play just well enough to hold a roster spot. This was his last year. He hit a home run in his last game and left the game a champion, in so many ways. Then I started thinking about our election. Is it too late to write in David Ross?
