An interview with David:
How long have you been a truck driver?
I have been a truck driver for 9 years. I started at the Roadmaster Drivers School. From there I went from Warner to Swift to JB Hunt. It was difficult to find a happy place within different companies. However, I started 4 years ago as a company driver at the company I am at currently at and now I’m in a lease purchase program.
What do you do when you are stuck in traffic?
The main thing I like to do when I’m stuck in traffic is listen to audio books. The audio books I listen to tend to be more educational with a focus on business and success. When I’m stuck in traffic I do a good job of not getting stressed because I know there is nothing I can do to control it.
What do you listen to on the radio?
It really depends on where I’m at. I like to listen to certain playlists when I’m in different areas. For example, I like to listen to classical music when I’m in city traffic and I like listening to Rock music from the 70s when I’m on the open roads.
Do you still use the CB radio?
I don’t use my CB radio nearly as much as I used to but I still use it from time to time. It can still be very helpful especially when asking about the weather up ahead if I know conditions might not be the best.
What’s your favorite stretch of highway?
This is a tough one but I would have to say US 7 in Vermont by Lake Champlain. This is an especially pretty drive during the winter.
What’s the best feature on your Freightliner truck?
The most useful feature on my Freightliner is the Intelligent Powertrain Management. I use it to set my cruise control a few MPH above and below the speed that I want to go. This really helps with my fuel economy and efficiency. I also enjoy the Detroit Assurance Collision Mitigation system. This has gotten a lot better due to fewer misreads now than in the past.
What role does social media play in your life?
I see social media as a tool that is resourceful, informative, and educational. Anything and everything is on social media. If you have a quesiton, someone out there has probably already asked it. I do see some of the entertainment value, but I mostly use it as a business tool to listen and learn from others. I like to post, comment, and share often. However, comments can sometimes just lead into debates so I only comment when I really feel commenting is needed.
